The Peacocks Prevail – Just how impressive was the St. Peter’s win against Kentucky?

For just the 10th time in March Madness history, a 15-seed defeated a 2-seed in last night’s first-round action.

The small St. Peter’s from Jersey City, New Jersey, with a student body just over 2,000, beat the blue blood Kentucky Wildcats 85-79 in overtime.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari was a pioneer of the one-and-done system being implemented into college basketball. And he was able to win the 2012 National Championship with the aid of one-and-done’s Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

He then brought Kentucky back to the championship game in 2014 and the Final Four in 2015.

All these accomplishments and the many more accolades earned him a lifetime contact with the university, earning him about $8 million a year to coach the Wildcats in 2019.

And his team lost in the first round to Shaheen Holloway’s Peacocks. And, oh yeah, Holloway makes about $266,000 a year.

Kentucky has four assistant coaches that make more than Holloway at $850,000, $450,000, $525,000 and $300,000.

St. Peter’s entire athletics budget is only $7.5 – not just basketball, but all athletics.

Kentucky’s Rupp Arena, where the men’s basketball team plays its home games, holds 20,545 spectators. That makes it the fifth-largest arena by capacity in all of college hoops.

St. Peter’s plays in Run Baby Run Arena on the university’s campus. The facility holds 3,200 fans.

But the Peacock faithful were enough to get their team the 2022 MAAC Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

And their stunning win against Kentucky was the program’s first-ever win in the dance and the MAAC Conference’s first win since 2009.
