14 April - Rangers v. Astros Pick (8:10 PM ET)
Tonight, we get an in-state Texas baseball showcase when the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers face off at Minute Maid Park. These two teams have been divisional rivals since 2013 and since then the series has been tight with the Astros winning 93 of the 181 matchups. In terms of MLB stature, its been completely opposite with the Astros making it to four World Series and winning two of them, while the Rangers have only made the playoffs twice and not once since the 2016 season.
For the Rangers tonight, they have the veteran Martin Perez on the mound, who last year had a very good but surprising first season back with the team who originally singed him out of Venezuela. Perez faced the Astros five different times last season, with the Rangers losing 4 out of those 5 matchups. Perez in the last three starts against the Astros, struggled to say the least, giving up 13 earned runs in 17 innings of work. The Astros smacked Perez, the team combined had a .301 batting average when facing the veteran left hander and with the team batting .273 against a lefty who they have seen before, I do not see that changing tonight.
On the bump for the Astros is another Venezuelan in Luis Garcia, who has been one of the top pitchers for the Astros over the last couple seasons. Garcia, has started 3 times versus the Rangers in his career, posting 16.1 innings of work while only giving up 4 earned. This Rangers roster has had just about zero success against this right hander, with a combined slash line of .178/.213/.222 in 45 at bats.
Tonight, I am going with the Astros, who have won 7 of the last 10 at home when facing the Rangers and 14 of the last 18, along with the fact of the Astros great recent history against the left hander in Martin Perez. Take the Astros to start the Texas weekend series off with a win, in comfortable fashion.
